Conservation Efforts to Save Giant Pandas

THIS PAGE IS BEING WORKED ON NOW & WILL BE FINISHED SOON

Recent Discoveries About Whether Pandas Live Alone, Or Not:

It was formerly believed that giant pandas always lived alone except during mating times or during the raising of cubs.  However, after more recent studies it is now known that sometimes giant pandas share large territories when there is enough bamboo present to support the numbers.  This means that pandas meet up at times other than mating season.

How Much Is Known About Giant Pandas?

Giant pandas live pretty secretive lives.  Due to the areas they live in not enough is known about this endangered species.

More and more is being learned about giant pandas all the time.

Why Is Studying Giant Pandas Important?

The more that is known about a wild species the better the chances are of preserving the species in its wild habitat.

When more is learned about a wild species and how it lives and reproduces the more steps can be taken to ensure its survival in the wild.

Where Is The Best Place To Study Giant Pandas?

IN THE WILD!!  Wild animals belong in the wild.

By studying the giant panda in the wild, by studying what they eat, how they live, and how their environment effects them and they it, the better we can find ways to protect them in the wild.

Why Is It Crucial To Support Conservation Research In China?

If the bamboo forests in the mountainous regions of central China continue to be cut down there will be no where for the wild giant pandas to live.

In the past poaching was a huge threat.  In more recent years so to more education and more enforcement against poaching of wild pandas for the pelts and body parts has decreased.  However, many giant pandas in the wild still die from poacher who set traps for musk deer and the pandas get caught in those and die.

At a time not long past the pelt of a giant panda could easily bring three times the annual income of Chinese peasants.  Therefore poaching was a very lucrative business.

Heightened education regarding the uniqueness of the Giant Panda it starting becoming viewed as a national treasure, thus the Chinese people began valuing the wild giant panda more and more.  As a result the general population is rural areas began viewing giant pandas as something to protect and preserve.

This goes to show that educational programs raising awareness for endangered species really can make a difference in the survival of an endangered species.  So follow this example and begin educating your friends about endangered wildlife and ways of protecting and preserving wild habitats.

Too bad the Chinese people and government does view the tigers in their country the way way they are coming to regard the giant panda.

Is Anything being Done To Help Save The Giant Panda In the Wild?

the Chinese government has established twelve nature preserves.  Those Chinese nature preserves contain areas that have bamboo and have population of giant pandas in them.

Hopefully this will help protect some habitat areas from being ruined by domestic farm animals such as goats, sheep and cattle.  Those domestic herds graze on the new growth of bamboo seedlings thus greatly diminishing the amount of bamboo that will be around to grow big enough for the wild pandas so use as a food source.

Some attempts to relocate wild giant pandas to habitat areas the currently do not have pandas living there but could sustain pandas.

Probably one of the greatest hopes if that strips of land populated with bamboo is being created.  those trips of land containing bamboo stretches from one isolated habitat to another.  these strips of land are referred to as "bamboo corridors."

Bamboo corridors will make it possible to pandas to migrate back and forth as they need to for food or breeding.  these 'bamboo corridors' can prevent starvation during bamboo die-offs as well as help keep the gene pool more diverse.

By 2005, the Chinese government had established over 50 panda reserves, protecting more than 2.5 million acres which is about 45 percent of remaining giant panda habitat which is helping to protect more than 60 percent of the wild panda population.  While that sounds like a lot you must consider how few are left, thus how few that 60% is in regards to how many.

Do Giant Pandas Have Any Natural Predators?

If a giant panda survives to adulthood in the wild it does not have many natural enemies.  However, young giant pandas can become prey for jackals, leopards & yellow-throated martens.

Snow leopards, who themselves are endanger of extinction shares habitats with wild pandas in some of the high mountain ranges will prey on young wild pandas if they get the chance.
